What is a daily standup template?

A daily standup template structures the short, regular check-ins agile teams use to stay aligned, covering what got done, what's planned next, and any blockers in the way.

Most standup templates only tell you what to say once you're in the meeting. This one covers the part that actually determines whether the meeting stays useful: running it next to a task board, picking the right cadence, and knowing when to switch to an async format instead of forcing everyone into the same daily call.

What's inside the template?

The template covers four parts:

  1. Setting the standup up right, including a cadence tip
  2. The facilitator's project overview, with a worked example
  3. The attendee round-robin, with a facilitation tip
  4. An async alternative for distributed or remote teams

How to use the template

Start with section one before your first standup, not during it; running the meeting next to your task board is what keeps it from turning into a status meeting. Use the facilitator's project overview to set context at the start, then move into the round-robin, keeping updates short and saving discussion for afterward.
